Buying a Used Boat: The Pre-Purchase Survey
A pre-purchase survey is an independent inspection of a used boat's hull, structure, rig and systems, typically costing $20–$35 per foot plus haul-out fees. Commission it yourself, after your offer is accepted subject to survey, and use the findings to renegotiate on safety-critical and big-ticket items — not cosmetics. On any boat over $30,000 it is money well spent.
What a survey covers
A pre-purchase survey typically includes hull moisture readings, structural inspection, rig assessment for sailing boats, systems checks (electrical, plumbing, steering, fuel), safety equipment compliance and a sea trial where possible.
Engines are often surveyed separately by a mechanic — an oil analysis and compression test are worth the extra few hundred dollars on any older motor.
Independence matters
Engage the surveyor yourself. A surveyor recommended by the selling broker is not automatically compromised, but the report should be commissioned by and delivered to you.
Using the report
Split findings into safety-critical, near-term and cosmetic. Safety-critical items are legitimate grounds to renegotiate or walk; cosmetic items rarely move a price. Get quotes on the big-ticket items before you make a counter-offer.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a boat survey cost in Australia?
Expect $20–$35 per foot for the survey itself, plus the cost of a haul-out if the boat is in the water — the hull must be inspected dry. A 35-foot yacht commonly lands between $900 and $1,500 all-in.
Do I need a survey for insurance?
Most insurers require a survey for boats over a certain age (often 20–30 years) or value before they'll write a policy. A condition-and-valuation survey is a lighter, cheaper version of the pre-purchase survey.
Should I attend the survey?
Yes — you'll learn more in two hours beside the surveyor than from the report alone. Save questions for natural breaks, and don't bring a crowd; the surveyor needs to concentrate.
