Emergency & Safety

In an emergency, call 000.

If life is at risk, call 000 immediately. For marine assistance, contact your state's official marine rescue service (for example, Marine Rescue NSW on VHF Channel 16 or 13 SEAS / 13 7327).

On-water emergencies

If someone is in immediate danger on the water, call 000. Emergency services can coordinate police, ambulance, and rescue responses.

If you carry a marine radio, VHF Channel 16 is the international distress frequency and is monitored by marine rescue services around Australia. State marine rescue services also operate assistance phone numbers, such as Marine Rescue NSW on 13 SEAS (13 7327).

Marine rescue by state

Each state and territory has an official volunteer marine rescue service. Contact details and coverage vary by location, and can change over time — always confirm the current service and number for the area you are boating in before you head out.

Save the relevant numbers for your local waterways in your phone, log them into your VHF radio, and let someone ashore know your plans before every trip.
